Why I Think Meet Up Groups Are Stellar For MLM
Posted by Phil Sanko on May 16, 2012 in Home Business Blog, Offline Marketing Strategies | 3 commentsMeet Up Groups are becoming a very popular way to meet new people, learn some cool new stuff, and become a networking maniac. I recently started attending a variety of meet up groups last month so I thought I’d share my experience and personal strategy. Yes, I believe there is a strategy involved when attending meet up groups so let’s dive in.
What Are Meet Up Groups?
According to MeetUp.com, Meet Up Groups is “the world’s largest network of local groups. Meetup makes it easy for anyone to organize a local group or find one of the thousands already meeting up face-to-face. More than 2,000 groups get together in local communities each day, each one with the goal of improving themselves or their communities.”
Meet Up Groups mission is “to revitalize local community and help people around the world self-organize. Meetup believes that people can change their personal world, or the whole world, by organizing themselves into groups that are powerful enough to make a difference.”
MeetUp boasts 9 million monthly visitors, 9.5 million members, 280,000 monthly meet ups, and 92,000 local meet up groups.
What Meet Up Groups Should I Attend?
This is the beauty behind meet up groups… You can use ANY group to network with new people and eventually share your business opportunity.
There are meet up groups for literally any subject: professional networking, internet marketing, meeting local singles, outdoors activities, etc. The list goes on and on.
Here is my personal advice based on my experience with meet up groups so far:
1) Join a group that is related to professional networking. Remember, you want like-minded individuals to join your business. So go meet other professionals!
2) Join a group that is related to a personal hobby you have. One of my hobbies is playing guitar, so I joined a group that had weekly jam sessions. Not only do I get to expand my knowledge of music, but I get to meet new people who just might be interested in what I do for a living!
3) Join a group with a subject you want to learn. Joining meet up groups to learn something new shows others that you are open minded. Furthermore, when you empower others to help you learn something new, it creates an immediate relationship.
My Personal MLM Strategy For Meet Up Groups
Above, I gave some advice on three different meet up groups to start attending. Here’s where most network marketers blow it.
Similar to the subject matter I wrote under MLM On Facebook – Top 5 Epic Fails, how you use meet up groups to expand your MLM should not involve cramming your business down other people’s throats.
Remember, people LOVE to be listened to and LOVE to talk about themselves.
So I let them do exactly that!
When I attend meet up groups (regardless of subject) I literally avoid talking about my business and focus more on two things:
1) Listening and learning about other people.
2) Collecting business cards or contact information.
Network marketing is all about figuring out what the wants, needs, and desires are of your prospect. If you learn how to shut your own mouth, ask the right questions, and truly listen to other people, they will literally tell you this information. Furthermore, if you show genuine interest in what another person does, it will undoubtedly lead to them asking about what you do.
So Phil, is this when I get to get on top of the desk and blast information about my AMAZING, life-changing, mind-boggling business opportunity?
NO.
Remember, meet up groups are about keeping it social and fun, not cramming your business opportunity down people’s throats. Here’s what I say when people ask me about what I do at meet up groups…
“I’m a home business consultant. Basically I show people how to make extra income from the comfort of their homes and I also help current home-business owners expand their business online.”
Again… At this point, I shut my mouth.
If they ask for more information, this is where I ask for their contact information – business card, phone number, email… whatever you can get! Follow up with them at a later time.
Here’s another gem. Even if someone does NOT ask about what I do for a living, I will still ask for their contact information.
The ultimate goal is to contact each individual outside of the meet up groups and get them to a company tool (website, sizzle call, etc.).
Meet Up Groups – My Strategy In A Nut Shell
1) Attend a variety of meet up groups.
2) Be social and have fun.
3) Collect contact information
4) Contact the people at a later date/time and get them to a company tool.

Phil, great blog post! I personally haven’t used Meeting Groups but I will implement in the future because it’s a great way to build a local team.

Thanks for stopping by J.R. While I definitely leverage the internet to grow my team, I think it’s important to continue pursuing a local team. Like most network marketers, I have burnt some of my warm market. Showing that you can grow your team locally despite getting No’s from your burnt market will inevitably have those same people wanting in later on in the game!
